Your kids WILL thank you!

Being an advocate for your child is a LOT of work. Never for a moment doubt that it is a worthwhile investment of your time & energy. Some day your kids WILL thank you for it! 🙂

Is your child obsessed w/certain things yet doesn’t seem to be able to complete a simple task? Here in ADHD-land we call that “hyperfocus” (unless it’s OCD and then it’s a different matter). Snapping someone out hyperfocus is no easy task, and failing to do so is not just willful disobedience on their part. Allow time for the transition & go into the situation hanging onto your temper. 🙂

People in hyperfocus mode lose all sense of time and schedules – which is terribly frustrating if YOU are on a schedule. To prevent hyperfocus from occurring, it’s a good idea to discuss ahead of time when a particular activity must come to… an end and a new one is to begin. Use a timer. Sometimes, you will physicially need to place yourself between the person in hyperfocus and the thing they are “obsessed” with ie. TV, video game, computer. Offer up something else that they enjoy to help the transition or a reward of some kind if they are able to break the focus within a certain time frame.

On the flip side, hyperfocus can lead to some amazing achievements. In adults especially if there is good direction, hyperfocus can be time of intense creativity and production. The key is to learn how to control it to make it work for you.

A very late in the day (What can i say, I’ve been working my tail off here at the YCM conference in TN. 🙂 “If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”

This quote reminds me of the time I set my house on fire. I blame my wife! She had me remodel our 2nd floor bathroom years back while I was off my medication. I cut some corners because I got impatient – Oh and to top it off, I also cut a supporting beam that kept the toilet from falling through the ceiling. A couple of years later, while remodeling the kitchen, a friend who is in the construction business pointed out my “oops”! Good thing too! Looked like that toilet was getting ready to plunge through the ceiling. 😀

The fine folks at Time Timer sent me a couple of their timers to test & evaluate and you know what? I love those things!! It’s basically an alarm for people who lose track of time easily. But, it’s not just any alarm, it’s also VISUAL alarm! I use it while working in the office, and it works with kids too. Whether keeping track of how much time they have left in the pool or in time out, it’s a great tool. 😀 And they have an Iphone app as well! Bonus!

So this week, I’m talking about creativity again (pet subject!)! Creativity is one of many positive qualities of an ADHDer and I think it’s a good idea to spend time developing it. What we lack in organization, we’ll more than make up for with creative, out-of-box thinking! Today’s creative exercise was inspired by the Hutson School here in Indy – their students got me hooked on a piece of software called istopmotion. Check it out!

I don’t know if it’s the special mix of ADHD traits like impulsivity, creativity & the inability to accurately judge time & resources, but ADHDers like going for the gusto. We’re passionate about our interests & if we’re not careful, our passion can consume us & isolate us from those around us. But in general, being passionate is a great thing & if properly channeled can lead to amazing things.

Being passionate about what you do often leads to success without that being your main priority. “Winners forget they’re in a race, they just love to run.” Which movie?

Time is our most precious commodity and if you’re like me, you’re really bad with putting together a schedule that is both practical and helps you achieve all your goals in the right order. I like to work with my wife (my sympathetic enforcer!) and put together a plan for the next day the night before. Knowing what my starting point is the moment I wake up often makes the difference between a productive day and one filled with time-wasting and frustration. How do you prioritize?
