Remember that kids with ADHD often have other disorders of executive/sensory functions which leads them to act in ways that are outside typical ADHD behavior ie. frequent violent outbursts, OCD, or depression. ADHD is primarily inattention &/or hyperactivity, impulsivity & inability to plan/organize/follow-through on tasks.

I’ve had several parents mention that their kids act violent and angry. Everyone has bad days, but if your child has frequent, violent outbursts, it might be time to talk to a doctor – explosive behavior is not associated with ADHD…although its cause is related in that it’s usually an issue of neurology and not because the child wants to be willfully disobedient or enjoys being violent.

Here is a great book to read and better understand why some children have violent melt-downs. It’s called The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children.

“Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” John Wooden

For the last week, I have been working on another book. Here’s the funny thing, I cannot spell, my grammar stinks and I struggle with reading…and this is my fifth book! Thank God for spell check and editors! Don’t let anything get in the way of you accomplishing the things you want to accomplish. Where there’s a will, there’s away! 🙂 Have a great weekend everyone!

I am half way through The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Had to see for myself what all the fuss is about. The book is fun and funny and it got me thinking about getting back to journaling again. Of course I’m going to see the movie! This will be the first time in my life that I will read the book, before seeing the movie! My wife keeps telling me that the book is always better than the movie…what do you think?

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch was an emotional but worthwhile read. It’s a book that forces you to ask some hard questions: What’s important now? What’s my legacy? What are my dreams? Am I living life to the fullest? Great book to help you back up and look at the big picture of your life. Pretty short too! If you search Youtube, there’s also a video where Randy gives that “last lecture” that the book is based on. Really amazing! 11,000,000 views and counting if that tells you anything!

Delivered from Distraction a book by Hallowell & Ratey has brought me much hope. ADHD can be overwhelming and make you feel like you’re losing your mind and that you’re all alone in your struggle. Books like this one, help you verbalize and translate what’s happening in your head. It’s a great starting point to learn about ADHD. I usually suggest it to older teens and adults who suspect that they may have ADHD or newly diagnosed individuals.

Review: The House that ADHD Built

There are folks out there putting out great material to help ADDers. One of them is Rob Hanly, and I highly recommend his e-book The House That ADHD Built. You can download it from his website, and it’s competitively-priced with a cost of nothing. Yes, it’s FREE!
