I just saw a poll on additudemag.com that made me curious; 33% of people who responded said that an ADHD diagnosis in themselves or their kid made them feel shame & they were uncomfortable talking about the diagnosis w/others. 30% of people felt relieved as the big mystery of their lives was revealed, 10% felt regret at not knowing sooner, 8% were glad because now they could get treatment and “get better” & 5% were sad because the things that made them different actually turned out to be a “disorder”. How did you feel?

The first step in coping with ADHD is accepting that you have it. I meet many adults who recognize themselves in my story, yet are hesitant to get diagnosed. I can understand the fear of a positive diagnosis, that confirmation of “yes, you have this thing!”, but when it comes to ADHD, the diagnosis can actually bring relief, clarity & a variety of options to help get life back on track. Have you been putting off your diagnosis? If so, why?

Is ADHD Overdiagnosed?

I get asked this question all the time. My experienced, educated, expert answer? I really don’t know!

I’m not a psychologist, and I can’t give you the blow-by-blow evolution of ADHD as seen by the folks who do the diagnosing. I keep HEARING that now, more than ever, more people are receiving a diagnosis of ADHD and you know what? if that’s true, I think it’s a good thing!
